When Mary McCarthy wrote MEMORIES OF A CATHOLIC GIRLHOOD, a friend told Bettijane Eisenpreis, only half in jest, that she should write “Memories of a German-American-Jewish-Pennsylvania Girlhood.” And she did. FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION THE LONGS OF WILKES-BARRE is a series of stories of a family – German Jews who migrated to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in the mid-19th Century, and in the words of the Bible, "were fruitful and multiplied." It traces the fortunes of Great-Grandpa Simon Long from his birthplace in Bavaria to his own tiny corner of the New World. There his family grew, prospered, and told stories of the old country and the new. Author Bettijane Long Eisenpreis listened and has added a few tales of her own in this marvelous family history. Our fascination with genealogy is growing, as evidenced by the popularity of the TLC program “Who Do You Think You Are?” and the tremendous success of Ancestry.com. Into this moment in time, we introduce Bettijane’s tales, which will delight nostalgic readers of all ages.

Many people think of American Jewish history as being synonymous with the Jewish community of New York City. Of course, there were and are many other important centers of American Jewish life. From Generation To Generation - The Longs of Wilkes-Barre by Bettijane Long Eisenpreis focuses in on the history of one family, her family. In this loving and humorous, personal memoir, the author, for many years now a New Yorker, traces the history of her own family with particular emphasis on the family's progress in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Starting with her first known ancestor, her great grandfather's grandfather, in Pretzfeld, now a part of Germany, she continues with the family's settling in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania in the 19th Century and brings the story to her own place in this chronicle at the present.

From Generation to Generation is a quick and enjoyable read, complete with family tree outlined at the beginning of the book. If you are interested in genealogy, or American Jewish history outside of New York City, or simply wish to allow yourself the pleasure of being an onlooker to the life of one family, this book is for you.

From Generation To Generation The Longs of WilkesBarre Bettijane Long Eisenpreis 9781489588814 Books Reviews

This book is a series of charming vignettes of a family rich in history , spanning two continents . I loved the descriptions of Grandma Minnie
whose mother loved books so much that she named her eldest daughter Reada not Rita because she wanted her daughter to read a lot .
Bettijane brings her family to life as warm , Smart , funny and generous people . I also loved the historical desscriptions of all the places
that the family traveled to from Pretzfeld Germany to Alabama to Wilkes Barre and back, and all the little road trips Along the way .
From Generation to Generation reads like a book of short stories rather than a dry family history , it is fresh and funny .
From Generation to Generation - The Longs of Wilkes-Barre is a wonderful read for anyone who enjoys stories about real families, when fact is often stranger, more touching or even funnier than fiction. It's also a good book for people interested in the history--especially Jewish history--of families who were critical to the social and commercial development of Wilkes Barre, PA and Atlanta, GA. With charming narrative and beautiful old photos, a timeless family saga unfolds. It's told with great love and respect for family, pride of place, and respect for Jewish values.
Ms. Eisenpreis writes with warmth and humor about about her family. She brings them lovingly to life. At the end we feel we know them all as well as we know our own family.
I found this biography of a family very enjoyable. The journey from Germany to the US, to Pennsylvania, the South, and to New York City mirrored against events in US history, along with family "characters" and anecdotes, was fascinating.
I enjoyed this slice of America, and I imagine anyone who has ever spent time Wilkes-Barre, PA. would enjoy it as well. I also find the history of the author's Southern-Jewish roots to be fascinating. Eisenpreis has a flair for the colorful character sketch and the humorous anecdote- a fun read.
Oh, no! was my reaction as I read the last page of this book. I didn't want the story to end; surely there must be more to tell about this family and these places! I really wanted to read another chapter. The author has woven a charming tapestry that sets off long-ago events against her own lifetime. These are people NOT like me--and yet she makes it clear that they ARE like me. Reading this gentle memoir about the author's roots made me reflect on my own. It's a book anyone can enjoy!
More than variations on a theme, Bettijane's experience of judaism was far removed from mine. Although we have a shared respect for jewish values and ethics, the author's great love and enjoyment of religion was a revelation, to one of meaningless practices inspired by fear.

I did relate easily to the importance of family, and re-visited my own close ties to both sets of grandparents, and extended family. I found this personal history and journey through generations fascinating, sparked with wry humor, and containing much detailed and exacting information. The amount and quality of the research was impressive; and I enjoyed the trips to new and exciting places.

This is a book that will resonate with lovers of jewish history, family history, and a sense of continuity traveling through the generations.
